THE PLATFORM

A BETTER FIT
FOR EVERYONE.

Three ideas for a more connected IOP.

I KNOW
THE IOP.

BEHIND THE LENS AT THE IOP

My name is Taylor Beljon-Regen. Every student deserves comms tailored to their IOP experience.

As the current Co-Director of Membership and the IOP Comms Team’s Director of Photography, I’ve seen the IOP through both its people and its stories. My experience also spans Conferences, HPR, HPU, Fellows, and Policy.

The IOP is made of many different programs, possibilities, and people. I want to give each of them better tools to tell their story and make it easier for any student to find what’s going on.

Outside of the IOP

  • I write op-eds for the Harvard Crimson, building a background in press relations and written media.
  • As a Director’s Intern at The Common Good, I created graphic communications and briefings.
  • I edited 300+ policy briefs with over 3.2 million views at the Institute for Youth in Policy.
Co-Director of Membership

I understand how vital outreach and accessibility are to making everyone feel welcome. I’ve planned study breaks, Open Houses, socials, and IOPALOOZA (1,000+ attendees).

Comms Team Director of Photography

I’ve seen our comms process from the inside and know how to make outreach and event publicity clearer, more inclusive, and more visible.

Conferences · HPR · HPU · Fellows · Policy

Being in different programs with different comms needs taught me how to best serve our diverse communities through clearer procedures and improved outreach materials.

NEW THREADS

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE IOP?

Finding your place starts with finding what’s going on. My proposed IOPHub would bring events, program updates, and opportunities together in one place.

THE PLATFORM

THREE THREADS.
TAILORED TO YOU.

Scroll down to follow all three threads.

THREAD 01

NEW THREADSConnecting beyond the IOP

  1. IOPHUB: One Shared Pattern

    • Pilot IOPHub: one calendar and site for everything IOP.
    • Use a preplanned content calendar and shared templates for a more cohesive brand image, where every program is an integral part of our identity.
  2. More Faces in the Spotlight

    • Spotlight underrepresented programs and what the IOP feels like, with event recaps on the main Instagram.
    • Feature more students, including a ‘Faces of the IOP’ series.
  3. Every Program, in the Picture

    • Expand the Comms Cohort to include a comms director from every program.
    • Recruit more student photographers and train program comms directors so every moment gets captured.
  4. Sewing Programs Together

    • Become the point person for outside partnerships, keeping a running list of partners such as CPSES, PBHA, and the DSO.
    • Maintain a partnership tracker with names, contacts, previous events, and point-people so nothing dies when leadership changes.
  5. Merch You’d Actually Wear

    • Create new stickers and one limited drop per semester, such as a tote bag or socks, with designs submitted by students and picked by vote.

THREAD 02

STITCHED TO LASTInfrastructure for the future

  1. A First-Year Fit

    • Launch a First Year Liaisons program to put first-years at the front of our recruitment efforts, introduce them to the IOP, and help them build valuable leadership skills.
    • Create a First Event buddy system, so first-timers can arrive alone and leave with a friend.
  2. A Playbook Worth Passing On

    • Launch a Comms Playbook with a brand guide, template library, posting calendar, and ‘how we do things’ document to simplify social media and create a unified brand identity.
    • Give new Comms Directors a one-pager with onboarding materials, social media ideas, and an introduction to the Comms Cohort.
  3. Train the Next Pair of Hands

    • Introduce a shadowing system: each program comms lead trains a few underclassmen, so next year’s team is already built and knowledge is passed on.
    • Host a skills workshop each semester in photography, video, and design to give the Comms Cohort and Program Chairs the skills needed to succeed.
  4. Keep the Seams Strong

    • Build a shared photo and video archive sorted by program and year.
    • Hold monthly 20-minute check-ins with program leads.
  5. Listen, Connect, Carry It Forward

    • Run an end-of-semester survey on what people heard about, what they missed, and how they would rather hear it.

THREAD 03

FIT FOR EVERYONEComms is also COMMunity

  1. Every Program, Every Student

    • Spotlight all programs, especially public service programs, long after recruitment.
    • Create one written accessibility standard: alt text, captions, plain-text-friendly emails, and a one-page checklist.
  2. Find the Program That Fits

    • Develop a ‘Which IOP program is for you?’ quiz.
    • Create a one-page ‘How to get involved’ flowchart for House dining halls and an Instagram Story highlight.
  3. Fresh Connections, Familiar Patterns

    • Create a partnership menu (co-hosted panels, org swap nights, joint study breaks) so events are easy to repeat without getting stale.
  4. Outreach Should Be the Easiest Part

    • Send outreach emails to every single student on campus, plus student organizations and email lists, at the start of every semester.
    • Table once a month at the Science Center plaza and Berg with a spin-to-win merch wheel.
    • Create an opt-in GroupMe or text list that sends one line the morning of an event for people who never open email.

Different threads.One community, stitched together.

COMMS FOR EVERY COMMUNITY

EVERY PROGRAM, EVERY STUDENT.

Whatever your program does, you get the same support.

SPEAKERS AND EVENTS

Conferences Committee · Harvard Political Union · John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum · Campaigns and Advocacy Program · Fellows and Study Groups

  • Event and Registration announcements pushed out on the IOPHub and Social Media, at least 5 days in advance.
  • Formalize an event and speaker recap system, with our comms team photographers uploading materials within 24 hours
  • Publicize HPU debates on the main Instagram for increased attendance, with speaker spotlights

ISSUE PROGRAMS

Women’s Initiative in Leadership · Politics of Race and Ethnicity · Global Affairs Program · Program for Environmental Politics

  • Each speaker is announced in the program’s own words, not a generic post
  • A recap post after every talk
  • Every event shows up in IOPHub, so students find it in one place

RESEARCH AND POLICY

Policy Program · Harvard Public Opinion Project · Research & Strategy Group · Governance Lab

  • A one-page summary graphic for each finished paper or proposal, once its authors approve
  • Work with HPOP Comms to publicize HPOP results through the centralized IOP email using interesting graphics
  • Short profiles of GovLab teams while they build, so people can follow along

SERVICE AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

CIVICS · Citizenship Tutoring · Harvard Votes Challenge

  • Increase specific recruitment graphics for teachers and tutors before the Common App closes
  • Stories from volunteers who want to tell theirs
  • Harvard Votes Challenge updates shared across IOP channels and IOPHub

MEDIA

Harvard Political Review

  • Each new HPR issue gets its own graphic and a post on IOP channels
  • Spotlights on HPR authors, so readers get to know the writers
  • Issues and author features live in IOPHub next to events and opportunities

COALITIONS

Conservative Coalition · Coalition for the Arts · Gender and Sexuality Coalition · Service Coalition

  • Each coalition decides how its events are described, and the design follows
  • Every coalition event gets as much coverage as a major IOP event
  • Nothing about a member gets posted without their yes

QUESTIONS

THE SHORT ANSWERS.

What makes you the best fit for comms?

I know how IOP comms works inside and out right now, from my work as the Comms Team’s Director of Photography. I can hit the ground running and handle even the smallest problems without a learning curve. I also bring experience in management, photography, videography, graphics, press relations, and outreach from my internship and extracurricular work in communications.

What would my program get?

A branding guide and templates, training for your comms director, a spot in the Comms Cohort, and regular spotlights on the main IOP channels.

Do all programs really get the same support?

Yes. The plan is to spotlight every program, with extra attention to public service programs after recruitment season ends.

When will IOPHub, the branding guide, and templates be ready?

Within 30 days of taking office.

How will we know it’s working?

Monthly 20-minute check-ins with program leads, and an end-of-semester survey asking what people heard about, what they missed, and how they’d rather hear it.

How can I share an idea?

Email or text me any time. Contact info is just below.
